About Just Getting Started: Shading and Volume
This Art Clinic aims to improve your observational drawing skills and teach you how to create realistic subject matter using graphite and charcoal. Explore shading techniques, from understanding light and shadow to rendering lifelike objects on paper. By the end of the class, you’ll have the skills to bring your drawings to life, giving them a natural, three-dimensional quality. Class Level: beginner to intermediate. Please note there is a $10 model fee paid in class.
Schedule of Classes
Class 1) May 30 – Sighting and measuring, objects – For our first class, we will have a refresher on how sighting and measuring works. This is important for accurate proportions.

Class 2) June 7 – Value, egg drawing- This class takes a simple object (the egg) and allows us to practice creating a volumetric rendering of it’s likeness using graphite, erasers and blending stumps.

Class 3 June 14 – Paper on Paper- Exercises designed to rewire how we think about drawing. Only draw the shadows.

Class 4) June 21 – Fabric Drawing – We’re switching gears to see how we can create illusionistic volume using vine and willow charcoal.

Class 5) June 27 – Working from the Model- We’ll do a series of drawings designed to combine sighting and measuring and creating volume.

“Materials Pass” is an optional fee that rents out all the materials you would need for your Art Clinic class. For this session of “Just Getting Started”, the materials pass is $15. Please note that with Material Pass, you keep your artwork but are leasing the drawing/painting tools (like brushes and palette).
