General Course Description

Abstract Representation is designed for artists with traditional backgrounds to think abstractly in their work. This class pushes your understanding of composition design, color relationships, and eye movement and promotes using your artistic license.  This is an ideal class for artists who want to take their work to a new level.

About Session 2 of Abstract Representation: Abstract Painting from Photography

It is common for artists using photography as their reference to paint too realistically or too tight so that their painting looks like a photograph. What happens, when the artist uses that photograph, or multiple photographs, to make an abstract painting? In this session of Abstract Representation, we’ll do just that. We’ll discuss the possibilities of avoiding naturalistic colors, changing the perspective of our subject matter, or creating a blend of abstract and representational elements in our painting. We’ll then take these tactics and apply them to the live model at the end of our session. This is a great Art Clinic for both abstract and representational artists alike.  Please note there is a model fee of $20 paid in class.

This is a beginner to advanced level Art Clinic.

About Session 3 of Abstract Representation: Abstract Painting from Masterpieces

Session 3 of Abstract Representation piggybacks on Session 2, but it is not necessary that you have participated in Session 2.  We’re running with the idea of working from fine art, and changing it through abstraction. Picasso says, “good artists borrow, great artists steal”.  He’s an excellent example of someone who has taken a famous painting and reworked the composition, subject, and color to make it something entirely different.  What can we learn from reinventing an old master painting?  After selecting our masterpiece to reinvent, we’ll devise a plan to change the painting to fit with our time period and painting style. We’ll finish our Art Clinic working from the live model. This is a great Art Clinic for both abstract and representational artists alike.   Please note there is a model fee of $20 paid in class.

This is an intermediate to advanced level Art Clinic.
