Art Clinic Workshop: Figure Drawing to Painting

Fridays, 10:00 – 4:00pm, August 4 – August 11

About Figure Drawing to Painting

This workshop is about the 7 “P’s”.  Prior Preparations Prevents Poorly Planned People Paintings.  We’ll do warm up drawings and figure studies to get the creative juices flowing before moving to the canvas to sling paint.  You’ll find a big difference in your painting when you have familiarity with the model through drawing. Instruction will focus on drawn proportions, value studies, and choosing a composition while learning the important process of going from a drawing to a painting.   Please note there is a $40 model fee for this workshop. Minimum age 14.

Schedule of Classes:

Class 1) August 4 – 10:00 – 12:30- Begin figure drawing exercises geared toward painting.  Work with edges rather than line to represent brushwork.  These exercises are aimed to warm up before moving on to painting.

Afternoon – 1:30 – 4:00pm – Based on the drawings from the AM, compose the foundation of our two-day paintings.  Use values and shapes to map out important eye movement and negative spaces to fine tune proportions.  Painting palette can be limited for the first day.

Class 2) August 11 – 10:00 – 12:30- Additional figure drawing exercises geared toward painting.  This week, the exercises are about mark making so thick vine charcoal is a must. Exercises in sketching are important to work on and should aid the completion of the painting in the afternoon.

Afternoon – 1:30 – 4:00pm – Continue the painting from last week.  Artists will use sketches and “zoomed in” drawings from the AM to fine tune focal points and resolve troubled areas.

Supply List for Figure Drawing to Painting

This is an all-media class.  I would prefer that artists work in either conte crayon of thick willow charcoal in the AM, but any medium is acceptable for the afternoon painting.  Please email me if you have any questions regarding materials.
