10-week Art Clinic Class
Color can be challenging, especially when drawing with it. This Experimental Drawing Art Clinic breaks down color into bite-sized increments, emphasizing the use of a limited palette to enhance your observational drawings. Exercises center around drawing mediums such as conte crayon and watercolor pencils. Class Level: intermediate to advanced. Minimum age 14. Please note there is a $40 model fee paid in class.
Class 1) September 13- Conte Crayon, Warm Conte on Warm pastel paper – working from still life
Exercise: After introductions, we will be doing a day drawing using sanguine Conte on warm toned Paper. A simple still life will be our subject
Class 2) September 20– Conte Crayon, Cool Conte on Cool pastel paper– working from still life
Exercise: We will be doing a day drawing using ultramarine Conte on cool toned paper. A simple still life will be our subject
Class 3 September 27 –Nu-Pastel on toned paper – Still Life Day 1
Exercise: We’ll start off our exploration of Nu-Pastel with a two week still life. In class demos on how to use this hard version of a chalk pastel. For artists new to the medium, a limited palette is always a great option.

Class 4) October 11 – Nu-Pastel on toned paper – Still Life Day 2
Exercise: This is our final day on the still life. We’ll fine tune our details and focus on hard vs soft edges
Class 5) October 18 – Nu-Pastel on toned paper – model day 1
Exercise: Our next subject will be working form the live model. We will begin with some gesture drawing using newsprint and charcoal before doing quick sketches in Nu-Pastel. We will start a two week pose using the last hour of class. This pose will be repeated on October 25th.
Class 6) October 25 – Nu-Pastel on toned paper – model day 2
Exercise: This class will be dedicated to finishing up the long pose drawing began last week.
Class 7) November 1 – Derwent Inktense Pencils on watercolor paper, still life
Exercise: Our first day will be a day to experiment with the medium. Using just a few simple still life objects we’ll be testing the many ways to use this unique medium. Watercolor pencils are also an option, just know that they do not have as much chroma as the Derwent Inktense pencils.
Class 8) November 8 – Derwent Inktense Pencils on watercolor paper, model day 1
Exercise: We’ll use this day with the model to play with the inktense pencils doing multiple 2o-40-minute poses. How expressive can we get with the watercolor effects?
Class 9) November 15 – Derwent Inktense Pencils on watercolor paper, model day 2
Exercise: We will use to day to work on a more complete work of art. We will have one pose for the day.
Class 10) November 22 – Mixed Media with the figure
Exercise: Guess what? All these mediums can be used together! Let’s spend our last day experimenting with how these three colored mediums interact and combine to create exciting works of art.

Cold Press Watercolor paper, size is up to you, but I prefer on the larger size like 22×30″. 3-5 sheets
“Materials Pass” is an optional fee that covers all the materials you would need for this Art Clinic class. For “Experimental Drawing” the materials pass is $50. Please note that with Material Pass, you keep your artwork but are leasing the drawing/painting tools (like brushes and palette).
