10 week Art Clinic with J. Jordan Bruns
The age-old battle continues: line vs. edge. One is expressive and abstract, the other is graceful and representational—but which is better? More importantly, which is better for you? In this Art Clinic class, we celebrate both line and edge, discovering new ways to explore their significance in drawing. We’ll work with different drawing mediums that complement both line and edge, each in their own way. And maybe, by the end, we’ll answer that age-old question. Please note: There is a $50 model fee, payable in class. Class Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Schedule of Classes:
Class 1) January 10– Emotional qualities of broken, fast and slow lines
Exercise: Describe subjects with a variety of styles to change the viewers response
Materials: pencils, plastic eraser, and white drawing paper
Class 2) January 17 – Creating Space and Depth though Line
Exercise: Foreground, Middle Ground and Background, drawing in layers. We’re isolating the subject based on where it is in space.
Materials: 2B – 4B pencils, plastic eraser, and white drawing paper and Vellum (semi transparent) paper around 18×24″
Class 3 January 24– Working from the live model, “Simple proportions, Gesture, and Line Exercises”
Exercise: This is Jordan’s ever rotating battery of exercises that he does to get us warmed up for figure drawing. A strong focus on proportions and line expression.
Materials: Vine charcoal, kneaded erasers, and newsprint paper
Class 4) January 31 – Working from the live model. “Diebenkorn Revisions”
Exercise: Models don’t always get back into the correct pose after a break. That is good for these drawings where we use line to show our artistic journey and add an element of time to our drawings.

Class 5) February 7 – Working from the live model, “Sargent’s Line and Edge”
Exercise: Using compressed charcoal, we’ll do our very best to steal how John Singer Sargent was able to use both line and edge in a drawing to have both expressive and representational elements in the same work.
Materials: Vine charcoal, compressed charcoal (charkoal) kneaded erasers, and newsprint paper

Class 6) February 21 – Black on White, Traditional Edge Making
Exercises: Working in charcoal (willow and compressed), build a drawing without the use of line. Focus on the tone of one shape vs the one next to it.
Materials: willow and compressed charcoal, kneaded eraser, plastic eraser and newsprint paper
Class 7) February 28– White and Black on Grey
Exercise: Begin our class with a warmup still life drawing on grey toned paper. Using white and black conte crayons, add the lights and darks while retaining as much of the grey paper as you see fit.
Materials: kneaded erasers, black and white conte and grey Mi-Teintes pastel paper
Class 8) March 7– Paper on Paper
Exercise: This Exercise is designed to rewire how we think about drawing. In it, we will draw white paper on top of white paper. The key is to only draw the shadows.
Materials: pencils, 18×24” Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Pad, blending stump, and erasers
Class 9) March 14 – Working from the live model using graphite powder
Exercise: working with graphite powder and paper towel (provided) we’ll map out the model in broad strokes
Materials: 18×24” Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Pad, kneaded erasers and regular erasers and pencils
Class 10) March 21– Working from the live model – Seurat and the conte crayon
Exercise: Using the side of the conte crayon, we will layer fields of value on top of one another to create the illusion of the model.
Materials: black and white conte and Mi-Teintes pastel paper

Experimental Drawing: Linework
This class is designed for artists with traditional backgrounds to think abstractly in their work. This class pushes your understanding of composition design, color relationships, and eye movement and promotes using your artistic license. This is an ideal class for artists who want to take their work to a new level. All painting mediums welcome! $10 model fee paid in class.
